News comes out of Ohio that the Mount Vernon School Board has voted to fire a science teacher who has been on suspension since 2008 for "using a scientific device to mark several students with a cross and of keeping a Bible on his desk."
What amazes me most about this case is that it was a science teacher who did this. Not a math or social studies teacher, but an actual science teacher. When I was in high school, I had Ms. Burke for science. We all knew that she was a very devout Lutheran, but she never allowed her theology to interfere with teaching actual science and not this bunk being marketed as "Creationism". She loved science and teaching science because of the world that it could open for her and for us.
This "teacher", this Mr. Freshwater, didn't seem to understand that guiding principle. If he truly wished to teach theology, he should do so in its proper forum, a church. He instead used his position and authority push his theology on students who were there to learn actual science. He is part of the battle between the theocratic fascists and the rest of us. I hope that he never finds another "teaching" job in Ohio or any other state, but for some reason I am sure he will gladly be accepted in rural places in Georgia or Texas.
