Being a Democrat, a liberal and sane in Arizona is probably as rare as finding an honest person at Fox News (well, maybe not that rare). So, knowing that Arizona has a structural budget problem while the Republican dominated legislature plays around with "birther" bills is a bit disheartening.
That's right, instead of tackling the real issues facing Arizona, such as our over reliance on sales taxes and "user fees" to fund our state, our insane legislature is dealing with bills meant mostly to start a fight. One bill, Senate Bill 1188, would give preference to married couples in adoptions. Another bill, SB 1187, would allow a person in a divorce to ask for an extra 60 days (for a total of 120) before the divorce is finalized, in hopes of reconciliation.
HB 2544 would require candidates seeking the presidency to provide "an original long-form birth certificate that includes the date and place of birth, the names of the hospital and the attending physician and signatures of the witnesses in attendance." SB 1201 would allow firearms in many government owned buildings, including university classrooms. It would also allow a person to sue a government agency if they feel that they were "illegally" prevented from carrying a firearm on government owned property and if they win the suit and are not paid within 72 hours, they may seize a government owned vehicle of an elected office holder.
Let's also not forget the proposed legislation to end "birthright" citizenship for those children born in the United States to parents who are here illegally.
Not one of these bills is "needed" or even close to being "necessary" for the well being of the State of Arizona and its residents. Each of these bills is intended to push the agenda of social conservatives, gun "rights" nuts, morons who still think that President Obama is a "secret Kenyan Muslim" and those looking to pick a fight with the federal government.
So while Arizona burns, the Republican controlled legislature fiddles away.
