RIP Luck

I watched the season finale of HBO’s Luck last night and I have to say, it was the best episode yet.  Maybe it was the absence of the infamous Shakespearean cadence so favored by series creator David Milch.  Or maybe it was the “Derby” race scene where two of the three horses we had been following all season were competing.  Or maybe it was the rising tension between Ace and his nemesis Michael.

Whatever the reason, I will miss Luck.  Due to the unfortunate deaths of three horses associated with the show, HBO has cancelled filming of the second season.  No one knows if HBO will air the episodes already completed or if they will remain hidden from our viewing pleasure.  If the remaining episodes never air, we will be missing out on further great performances by Dustin Hoffman, John Ortiz, Nick Nolte and a host of others.  And we will also miss the incredible racing scenes that made you feel as if you were in the races yourself.

Luck will be missed and HBO will have to fill a very visible hole in its winter schedule.
